Spotlight: Maya Wilson's rise through the Reign academy

Maya Wilson joined Reign Rugby Academy at age 12 with no formal rugby background. Four seasons later, she's training with the senior squad and was recently named regional player of the month.

Early days

Maya's first taste of rugby came at a school taster session our coaches ran in 2022. "I didn't think I'd be any good," she says. "I just liked that nobody was telling me to be quiet." Within six weeks she was attending Reign's open development sessions twice a week.

What separates her

Coaches highlight her work ethic and her ability to read the game. "She sees passes two steps ahead of most players her age," says head coach David Jones. "And she's the first one in to training and the last one out."

What's next

Maya is balancing senior squad training with her final year of school. She's been invited to a national U18 selection camp in August.
